Of All the “Featherweights” I have owned, this may be one of the rarest.
To begin with, I only add Featherweights” to my collection for their rarity, or excellent working and cosmetic condition. Condition and cosmetics aside, you may be wondering what makes this 221 so rare and what I am about to reveal. Frankly, I was in disbelief when I checked the Singer Website for 221 Serial Numbers. AF935517 indicated that it was a class 15. But, clearly this was a 221 not a class 15, dated May 14, 1941. Then I thought, well maybe it is an AF after all. So, we have a lovely little black, gold and chrome 221”Lady” with a questionable age. Isn’t that just like a “Lady”? She doesn’t reveal her age! She isn’t telling and she is definitely not a Style 15, all of which means she is RARE and indeed a VERY, VERY COLLECTOR’s COLLECTIBLE, and this is what will keep her value up.
She is UNIQUE, and has a “STORY” to tell.
In researching our rare little beauty, I learned that by 1941, Singer Company was already involved in the World War II effort, and had allotments of different class machines, since aluminum was in such demand, and is the body of the 221. They occasionally made the 221 under the allotments for other machines made of cast iron.
So, she is a cool “69” years.
These machines only become more valuable as time goes on since they were only produced for about 30 years, and they just don’t make anything even close to this quality now. More each day are cannibalized to keep other machines running, so the numbers are dwindling.
You are bidding on a Singer 221 manufactured in Elizabethport, Elizabeth N.J. factory circa- 1941.
IT is the ULTIMATE Quilters & Collectors Dream Machine with everything! The benefit to you is that you don’t have to look for the perfect setup, it’s here!
Although this machine was in excellent condition when I acquired it, It still has been thoroughly cleaned, oiled and adjusted to perform at its peak.
It is smooth and powerful. It stitches forward, reverse, and nice straight seams. The tensions are perfectly adjusted, no skipping stitches, no puckering.
The foot control is in perfect condition and the cords are new. The machine can go forward slow to fast and adjust between speed with perfect control. No jumping speed straight to blazing fast. Included is the Vintage Singer Quilting Foot, so difficult to find. This machine has indeed caressed and stitched her way through many a quilt top.
The original owner was a quilting friend and needed to downsize her 221 collection. Although I didn’t need another 221, I bought it to help out. It wasn’t until several years later that I checked the serial number and learned this little “Featherweights” secret.
